DVD Review by Cynthia Sheppard -

Cynthia Sheppard, Illustrator and art director for Magic: The Gathering said:

"new DVD of James Gurney," Fantasy in the Wild "is an enchanting reminder that there's fantastic inspiration all around us. Gurney takes us on a journey through the creation of two concept art realized in a new way outside his studio in various locations around the city.

the DVD covers a range of pointers to the reference collection from places you might not think to look at, as well as materials and tools for the work on site. wondering if a cone of movement could be a staple of art supplies? you should look and learn ....

It transforms the mundane into the fantastic, and provides useful information with all the warmth and depth you would expect from a Gurney production. It feels very much like you pass an array of weekend alongside Gurney as he de-mystifies the process to illustrate using casein and discusses some of its unconventional methods to interpret the objects daily in creative concepts.

For me, watching the video was like the voice of a friend benevolent artist who pushes me to get off my ass and leave the studio for a new perspective. There was a sense of "look how much fun it is! which runs through the whole production, and I guess others watching this will want to try the concept approach to outdoor art too. "
