Do note that orders these stages varies enormously publisher to publisher, and even book to book. Most of these steps (or at least most) will happen at some point or another as long as there is a feeling of liberation, but the chronology of everyone is a little different.
That said, here we go. Fifteen post-steps book deal to release date:
- Joining a group debut. This is, in any case, a mandatory step, but I recommend very strongly if you are a beginning. For me, Sweet Sixteens and the team YA Snape opened the door to a ton of possibilities (such as conferences! And mini towers of books!), Me introduced to so many wonderful people I now consider friends, m helped him feel sane in this crazy editing process * and * gives me access to the amazing book early. And honestly, the only support is very well worth it. :)
- Tell blurbs As I said before, when this happens varies, but eventually your editor will ask you if you have ideas you would like. ask to get blurbs. This is a terrifying and exciting thing that eventually leads to people you admire, hopefully say nice things about your book.
- Share your ideas for the covers. This is such a fun part of the process. At some point, your editor will start thinking hedging ideas, and often the first step is you, the author, referring to what you had in mind for the cover / covers what you like you want emulate. Mood boards are a very fun (and useful!) thing to put together.
- cover models. Explicit you will eventually see the versions of your cover! And it's exciting! And amazing! And YAY!
- Pre-orders open. At some point, your book will magically appear on Amazon, B & N, BAM!, Etc. online. And people will be able to pre-order your book, which is a surreal and amazing thing.
- Cover reveal. Once you have seen several models and changes are made and everyone is happy, it's time to reveal the cover in the world! This is the first time that people start to associate an image with your book, and it also allows you to start thinking about booty, and dream of holding your book. Woot!
- First pass. This is the time when you will finally get your first letter edition. For some it is a time of weeping and gnashing of teeth. For others, it's scary, but exciting. For some particularly lucky, it is both. How much work is involved, and how long you will depend on your book and your editor, but rest assured, there will be changes for the better.
- Second, Third, Fourth, Final, etc. Pass. How many are going there and when they occur, as many steps vary. But there will be a lot of assists, and read your book so many times that you can recite passages in your sleep, and there will be a time when you feel as if you will pull your off nails rather than read it again . It's normal. Probably. And this too shall pass. (Get it, pass ? * Clears throat * Anyway ...)
- ARCs! And the day will come when you have to hold your book in your hand because the ARCs have arrived! This is a super exciting time / nerve-wracking because you not only have a book-like thing, but many people will learn to read also, for the first time. Ahhhhh!
- More blurbs. If you do not have blurbs earlier, probably you will start to get right about now. And even if you is get blurbs earlier, you are likely to get more around now too. So, the most admirable people saying nice things about your book. Yay!
- Early reviews. Now that ARCs are in the world, examinations will begin dripping. This is where you begin to decide if you're the kind of author reading your comments. There are no right or wrong answer, really, just make sure you take care of yourself during these terrifying times.
- comps Jacket. At some point, if your book published in hard cover, you will see the comps for your book jacket, and now you really have an idea of what your book will look like. There is something very, very cool that I totally loved.
- final copies printed! RED ALERT. YOUR BOOK IS TRUE.
- Final copies distributed! YOUR BOOK IS IN YOUR HANDS. And arrive at LIBRARIES. AND SOON people will buy it. AHHHH!
- RELEASE DAY. explanation and holy wow, indeed. Everything is real! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOOK, YOU!
