preschool circle time in our classroom is a time when we are all together in one place. We expect books, songs and activities that encourage children to interact, verbal construction, listening and social skills. We are always aware of how long these young preschool children can sit, as their attention spans are short. Here are some suggestions that have worked with us throughout the years...

circle time with our 3 year old is kept to the middle of our morning between centers time and snack. After we clean the centers, we push our shelves against the wall and use our block area for our gathering. As the children choose a book from the book corner, a teacher is placed on the circle time rug. I vary where the children sit so they are not next to the same child each day. Because there is little time for social circle, encouraging them to feel comfortable sitting and talking with all their friends.

After carpets were defined, the teacher leading circle invites them to find their mats (we sing a song "come to the circle" that I made years ago).

After they find their rugs, they look at the books they brought with them. Meanwhile, teachers set up the tables for snack.

When the teacher is ready to start a circle, their books are placed in a magazine rack and it's time to listen.

Each day we have a class helper. This special person gets to stay at the head of the circle and report time. He / she looks out the window to see if it's sunny, rainy or cloudy. The card appropriate image is selected and we sing a song of time that includes the name of the class of assistance. This is a very special time for each child when his turn!

A Then book enjoyed.

Sometimes we could have personal look books that were part of previous activity, such as pumpkin these books, the children then take home.

Circle time could also consist of sharing. We have someone to share every Wednesday. The person shares walk around the circle and the children give a key. {You can learn more about our person sharing here.}

We enjoy the snack after circle time, but keep our carpets on the floor. After snack, when all the children have finished, we have a second time circle. This is when we sing songs, perform finger plays or play games using props. I break our circle time because I think this young age group, shorter work sessions better.

This also when we could do some music to dance, or using instruments.

Our goal is to take the time to circle nice. There are times when we share moments when we listen, times when we work together in a business. If a child is not ready to be in the circle, is fine. it can go to the book area to look at the books. When he feels that he is ready to return, he quietly comes to the circle. for some, sitting and listening easier than for others . It is a work in progress, something that we are working on all year.
