An artist at work is always a subject of fun to caricature. Here are some of my favorites.
This shows J.M.W. Turner Varnishing the day before the Royal Academy opens its doors to the public. It is a pot-bellied imp with a long handled mop to brush. The paint bucket is marked "yellow".
Frank Millet outlined (probably memory) how John Singer Sargent looked when he painted "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. "
His friend Edmund Gosse described how he looked: "Instantly, he took his place away from the canvas, and some notation light ran forward on the lawn with the action of a wag-tail, planting at the same time, quick dabs paint on the image, then retired again, only with the same suddenness , to repeat the action of wag-tail. "
is a picture of Sargent . The painting took him many consecutive evenings. He set up the canvas vertically in front of the flower garden, where children posed with their paper lanterns.
