During our spring gardening theme, we explore root vegetables such as carrots with our preschoolers. We read books, learn how they grow, review, peel and grate, and even use them to art table!

Whenever we introduce something new, we give preschoolers a clue when they arrive on Monday morning. In this case, we had some whole carrots by the sign in sheet. This is called that we will explore in our meeting in the morning, before you actually start our activities. We read: "Carrot" and showed pictures of how the seed grew later in carrots.

It's important to let preschoolers explore the real thing, if possible, in a theme. In this case, we were able to provide carrots with their tops, so we can identify their ups and downs. We learned what portion grew up under the ground and raised on top.

We set up a table for kids to shred and grate the carrots. This is a wonderful practical life skill that helps develop fine motor skills skills.

And then, of course, we are given the chance to eat carrots during our time snack.

We expanded our exploration of the core by painting with carrot tops.

This Painting is a simple activity that involves soaking tops in orange tempera carrots, carrot paint shaped orange paper.

We use media plexiglass page to see real images at our table art.

We moved the peaks around on paper and realized that they are much more fragile than paint brushes and paint splashed more.

We added Green Paper on top of carrots and fringe cut into them to resemble real carrot tops.
We will follow up with a variety of seeds planting unit soil.
