so, here's a subject that I am somehow managed not to cover or even mention to that question nicknames!
Pen names are relatively common among writers and are used for various reasons, some of which include :.
- Avoid gender bias Unfortunately, this really only applies to women, because most people do 't really think twice about playing a book by a male author regardless of the genre. But unfortunately, there are people who will not read books written by women. Or will not read books of some kind written by women. What I find infuriating, but that's another post entirely on its own.
Often writers will shorten their names to make them more neutral to avoid it. J. K. Rowling, for example, famous chose the pen name J. K. its name because some boys were put off by reading a book by Jo Rowling. - famous name confusion. If your birth name happens to be Barbara Kingsolver Koontz or Stephen or Nicholas Sparks, etc., then you may want to consider choosing a pen name to avoid confusion and awkward conversations that end in "no, I am not that Nicholas Sparks. "
- difficult name to pronounce. If your name is made up mostly of consonants or otherwise difficult to pronounce, so this is another reason to consider a pen name.
- The writing in several genres. I understand, this is usually only one reason if genres are extraordinarily different, as, for example, the Middle grade and Erotica. or if you're a primary school teacher who writes erotica, and you do not want your students (or their parents) stumbling on your work. Or something similar.
- privacy and / or other personal reasons. Some people like their privacy. Or have a variety of other personal reasons that lead them to choose a pen name. And it is quite good, too.
The only downside I can really think of using a pen name is that obviously you will not see the name you were born with on the cover of your novels. But of course, if you selected a pen name, which was sort of the point. So.
Would you ever consider using a pen name (or you already use)? Why or why not
