So I do not usually do two book reviews in such close proximity, but after I finished reading broke by CJ Lyons, I knew I must do an exception. . Because this book deserves a boost
As usual, we'll start with the Goodreads Summary:
"The only thing fifteen Scarlet Killian never wanted is a chance at a normal life. Diagnosed with a rare and incurable heart disease, she never took the bus. Or giggled with friends for lunch. Or spied crushing of the corner of my eye. So when his parents give him three days to prove it can survive high school, Scarlet knows his time is now ... or ever. Scarlet could feel his heart beating out of control with all the locker and slammed each side glance in the corridor. But this school is far from normal. and discover the truth could kill Scarlet before his heart did. "So what really attracted me to this book was the combination of a disabled protagonist (I was pretty excited about) and the promise of a thriller -paced fasting, as the blurb on the back cover. And I admit, for the first 150 pages or so, I was wondering when the thriller would kick bit, because I do not find the first half of the book to be particularly fast.
That being said, the beginning was not boring. I enjoyed reading the life of Scarlet, and his views as a teenager to have never been to public school before was quite fascinating, it was not the fast paced thriller that I had been promised .
Queue rebound.
I do not want to spoil anything, so I will not give details, but I finished the second half of the book in a few hours. I do not usually stay up late to finish a book (I know is rare for a voracious reader like me, but I tend to be very self-disciplined), and yet I'm completely done with this book. Post rebound, the "fast-paced thriller" promise really had to live up to my expectations.
broke has a disabled protagonist who does all she can live life to the fullest, covers the mental illness of a powerful, realistic and certainly ends with a bang. I rating 4/5 stars and giving it a specific boost up.
I'd love to read more books that cover disability and / or mental illness while providing an exciting plot. Any recommendations?
