Many teachers were painting using color and light: A Guide for the Realist Painter as a manual in the classroom. Patrick O'Brien, who teaches painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, described the lesson he learned from the book:
We experimented with your masking range and method mix color channels. We used pages 123-131 in Color and Light, and also referenced pages 106-107 and 116-117.
For the year I brought some pictures simple for them to copy, because I wanted to take the drawing element out of it, so they can focus on the color scheme. The morning of the class I went to the MICA library to find a color wheel to use.
Looking through all the books on color, I could not find a single good color wheel that went gray in the center. So we had to use the small color wheel in your book on page 75. We used sheets and tape to make masks. As you can see, the first instinct of some students was to photograph with their phone and bring it back to their seats.
I had each student draw the object twice. We did a small painting in a range of colors, and their homework is to do another painting of the same scene in the other range. Almost exactly what you did in your video with CircusCircus sign.
And now I'm inspired to incorporate these ideas in my own painting as well. I'm working on a scene of New York Maritime 1940, which would be perfect for a cool range.
Thanks for the great ideas! --- Patrick O'Brien, MICA
If other instructors are class projects based on color and light ideas, please send me pictures and a description, and I will try to share them on the blog.
and whether to use color and light as your course guide, please let me know. In our small online store, we can offer discounts on group orders, and I can sign for each student
