World-Building Tip: The Ripple Effect

so this is something I really had to think about lately, while revising one of my WIPs and preparing to revise another WIP , which is also in need of the construction of major world.

Once you have established your world of reinforcing elements, be it technology, magic, scenery, culture, etc. The second step is to isolate each of these major elements and think about how it affects the world of your ProTag.

For example, if you incorporate some form of magic in your world, you need to think about the consequences. Does everyone uses magic? If so, it is considered normal? If yes, is it considered abnormal or strange for someone not to use magic? If this is a more modern, they have technology that works with magic, or are they two distinct entities? Did they cancel?

This works the same way with technology or fun gadgets. Say you have a world of science fiction with a technology that extends the life span. How this affects the population growth? Does everyone have access to this technology? Is it free, or extremely expensive, so that only the rich can afford it? How it affects the perception of the society of youth and old age? Does it affect the way society perceives the disease, whether chronic, terminal or the flu?

The ripple effect shown here, for me, is the key to effective and credible global construction. Each component of the world that you write in your novel has some kind of influence on your character in the world and sometimes it takes a little extra brainstorming to realize that while an element has more effect you perhaps originally conceived at the first imagined element.

Can you give examples of building the world ripple effect of a book, a movie or a TV show?
