Tones Too smooth-

Tones Too smooth- - When he translated his reference photo into a painting, Andrew Loomis softened the edges and small shapes subordinate unimportant. For example, it has simplified the details in the left hand of the model, and the delicate tracery eliminated in the lower half of the dress.

To idealize the figure, he became head of the slightly smaller model in the painting that appeared in the reference.

He was also aware of breaking the flat tones of the photo.

"One of the main things that identify a photo as a picture," he wrote in his classic book illustration creative, "is the ultra-fine tones."

When the photo presented monotonous values, as in pillows behind the shoulders of the model, it has enabled the pictorial surface with variations.

"Notice the accents placed here and here of darkness against light, to add punch, "Loomis said." The lights were forced to get a little extra sparkle. The background was reduced in places to avoid monotony of tone in the picture ".
