Can you paint a fantastic picture outdoors, directly from nature?
In Dinotopian scene called "Small Wonder" I wanted to show a springtime scene of two young people who are caring for a newborn dinosaur.
I painted the figures of the first in the studio, based posed models my son Dan and his friends, wearing fair Renaissance costumes. Then I asked a neighbor if I could put the painting in his tulip garden and finish there.

Hunt took the idea further place-painting when he created the allegorical scene "The Scapegoat." His idea of the image came from something he read in the Talmud, saying that a congregation conduct a symbolic goat to his death in the desert, bearing the sins of the people with it.
Hunt traveled with his art supplies on salt-encrusted shores the Dead Sea. He brought a goat with him for a model. His guides have warned that there was a risk hostile tribes near Oosdoom
The desolate landscape inspired Hunt :. "... never been so extraordinary scene of beautifully landscaped horrible wilderness is black, filled with foam asphalt and the slimy hand and smarting as a sting. - No one can stand up and say it is not cursed by God ... "

Reluctantly, he returned to his studio in Jerusalem but the goat died along the way. He brought samples of salt and mud to help rebuild the foreground, and left the empty center of the image. He bought another goat , skulls, skeleton and a camel, and worked them in the image.
