Gouache - Before watching your videos I never thought as an art medium. Is it true that, historically, it was used mostly by commercial artists for artwork that was to be repeated?

Hello from Germany, I really appreciate the painting in the wild show! I was wondering if you have some art for the preparation and exploration or the color (for example watercolor) swatches in a sketchbook? Not necessarily for some reason, but the abstract studies. In fact, I'd love to see a depth tutorial about making :) color thumbnails
Sam Gauss When you learn a new medium of painting, is the kind of exercise you recommend? Grayscale?
Khoa Tran hi james, is the department of art a real thing? As a club or something (I'm from vietnam btw)

Does painting Gouache help with painting oil? (Or more generally paint a mean help with the painting in another way?)
The answer is YES. Painting in an opaque medium such as casein or gouache is in many ways more like oil that is as transparent watercolor. You can approach the sequence of steps in the same way (as toning 1. Board 2. Background 3. shadows, halftones 4., 5. lights 6. highlights and accents.) The main difference is that, with water media every decision is greatly accelerated. Gouache encourage you to be direct and economical with your brush. In other words, it makes you think of a stroke, the mix and place it with one touch, rather than shake back and forth with it.

When you return to the oil, that means the economy and the deductible is paid too. You will be faster painter. Oil properties are not conducive to the franchise and the economy as much.
transparent watercolor is almost a different animal from the others. It demands a kind of thinking because you have to paint around the lighter areas inside-out, and that takes a certain amount of planning and deliberation. At the same time, he wants you to be intuitive, decisive and spontaneous. All good qualities to bring any kind of paint.

Have you intentionally decrease the value of the side of the light to create a form more? (The white head sculpture appears lighter than your painting.)
Have you intentionally decrease the value of the side of the light to create a form more? (The white head sculpture appears lighter than your painting.)
Yes, I usually limit the range of values towards the light and lighten a bit, and I try to unify or group the shadow values. Then, the paint becomes easier, poster-like, and more attention is of utmost importance in light shade in the transition, which was the obsession of Sargent and others.
BTW, I spray painted the plaster head to a light gray so that its brightest light come close to the white paper. If the model was white, there would be no way to match the apparent values of a 3D shape using a range of black to white paint on a 2D surface.

Yes, in addition to all its uses in the field of design, gouache has a rich history as a means art gallery, especially among French academics like Vibert and Leloir

My question :. is there a way to darken specific colors of the value for the sides of the shadow of an object in the shadows with its supplement without losing its saturation, eg green or red - making objects in the real world to lose saturation in their shadow sides along with the value [1945008?]

If you use the supplement to darken a color, he will lose saturation. But that's OK because the typical objects lose saturation in the shadows. Not always, though. If the shadow side strongly receives the color of light corresponding to the local color, it may be higher in chroma (or saturation) than the light side.

Ted Youngkin, my professor of perspective at the Art Center and also my high school teachers Burnes Bill and Bill Goggin. Beyond that, I do not have too many teachers living. Those I learned most were books, namely by Rockwell, Loomis, Speed, Solomon, Carlson and Bridgman.
Max Chew Zishen I noticed that you were flipping through your sketchbook and paint each hit out of the park! Have you no breaks or bad starts, or do you cut the book?

Thank you, Max. I had a lot of breaks and bad starts. I would say that about 20% are experiments that do not work as I had hoped. If I can not fix them, I cut them out. Instead I paint them in casein and do another on another day.

I add raw sienna and ultramarine blue to the pallet beside the black and white if I wanted to offset the cooling effect of white on gray. The room should look OK in all the light, hot or cold, as long as the color temperatures are for good in the paint. But I'm not too worried about the color temperature for this exercise since I'm mainly focused on value.

Yes, I developed a swatch table that I like to use for limited palettes. I do not paint often pure abstracts, abstract but seeks opportunities in real scenes.

Yes, and here's a post that deals with what I do when this happens.

I do like them for gouache and casein, as they have good pressure and edge definition, especially in apartments. Casein should be used with synthetics because the ammonia content can be hard on natural fibers.
Sam Gauss When you learn a new medium of painting, is the kind of exercise you recommend? Grayscale?
Yes, for new people in gouache or new physical painting, I recommend the black and white paint. It helps reduce the variables, so you do not have to worry about the color or chroma.
Khoa Tran hi james, is the department of art a real thing? As a club or something (I'm from vietnam btw)
The Department of Art is the name for me, my wife, and some paint pals of ours. One of our fellow blog, Steve, generously donated a supply of embroidered patches. Sometimes we use the patches for special prices. We have made consistent with our names and patches corresponding official so that we look at when we street painting. We also have cones marked in this way.
