The sketches below are some foreign based insects for a science fiction universe with sensitive flying robots. I looked through a lot of photos of insects, trying to imagine different ways to use the plan of a beetle or a fly as the starting point of the body.
A vehicle would require many of the same functional elements as a natural creature, namely, optical sensors, landing gear, the outer armor, wings and wing covers, fuel inlet tubes, and offensive and defensive weapons systems. The hypothesis of design that we have had until recently is that the manufacturing process lead to artificial beings with industrial geometry of straight lines and circles.
But recent advances in design and computer aided manufacturing, and even changing desktop suggests that such vehicles could begin to imitate the organic lines and surfaces real insects like Callipogon armillatus longhorn beetle, which is a marvel of natural engineering.
entymologist a friend gave me this amazing specimen 5 inches long, I like to study when I'm trying to imagine new types of vehicles. To learn more about exoskeleton engineering, I also understand crabs and lobsters parts that wash up on the beach.
