On-the-Spot Humorous Illustration

On-the-Spot Humorous Illustration -

I like to try new ideas when I draw there. One approach I've tried it several years ago is the study of character in the field.

For this, I am sitting in a hair salon while a client was a haircut.

I told them what I was doing, and they do not pay much attention to me after that. I used whatever the elements of the scene helped support the story, as the odd head shapes mounted on the barber chairs.

The client has not had a tuft of hair and beard like that. I kind of did that, and I exaggerated the barber, too. But I used real details of the scene, as the comb in the back pocket of the barber.

I drew the picture with a brush and ink on pencil underdrawing, about 11 x 14 inches. I was inspired by the cartoon illustration of Al Dorne, Norman Rockwell, and Mort Drucker.

I intended this to sketch the artist's Guide to Sketching , but it does ever did in the book. A book that inspired this reflection is Humorous Illustration by Nick Meglin .
