The studio is a large room in a professional building, lined with skeletons, drawing casts, copies of Sargent and Fechin and figures and landscapes painted by Watts and others instructors.
Watts started the workshop in 1992 when he was just 22 years, and now has about 250 students with a faculty of 10 instructors. His approach combines rigorously precise drawing with pictorial treatment he described as "controlled chaos". He brings to his art same discipline he learned early in his life when he was training to be a professional cyclist.
According to Article 1 September 06 American Artist, students begin with extensive experience in the design and progress to a palette of grays, then a "Zorn" limited palette of titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red light, and yellow ocher before moving to a full palette.
In this clip, he shows his own approach to painting a "gesture portrait", and explains some of his suggested palettes.
