Gouache materials list

Gouache materials list - I was putting together a list of gouaches materials for an upcoming workshop, so I thought I would share with you, too.

area
You can use the illustration board paper leaves watercolor , a watercolor paper pad or spiral-bound sketchbooks watercolor . However, I prefer to paint in gouache in 5.5 x 8.5 inches sewn hardcover in journals with watercolors.

The two I recommend are the watercolor Pentalic review (which has 100% rag paper 100 lbs), and Strathmore 400 Watercolor Journal (which has 140 lb paper and comes in hardcover and softcover formats). The Moleskine book is OK too, and has more pages than the other two, but the paper is thinner, so I recommend that one if you make more drawing and dry media from watercolor .

Brushes
• Apartments, synthetic 1/4 ", 1/2" and 1 "
• Rounds, synthetic or Kolinsky sand, assorted sizes 4-10

a good deal is to get a watercolor brush set with case (handles regular length) or a media brush handle water short set with Carrying case . This will fit on the page left open sketchbook.

There are many brands available, including Kolinsky brushes very expensive, but I do not think you have to spend that kind of money for most purposes. cheapest synthetic can be very good. If I find a good brush, buy some extras to have on hand. I found acceptable quality brushes in big box craft stores for very reasonable prices, but be checked. what you want to look for brushes that have a good or spring break, no floppy. The brush should come to a cutting edge - the edge or in the case of a flat. This way, you can use a fairly large brush to paint your image

If you are painting in casein , use only synthetic. do not use natural hair brushes (bristles or sand) because the paint can be hard on the fibers.

Painting
The Gouache Holbein sets are good, and you get a lot of colors for good value. Holbein made a set of 12 color and a set of 18 (check prices, I think the whole 18 is actually less ), which I use all the time . They also make a Gouache Acryla line, which has a closed surface after drying, which means that water does not dissolve the paint dries.

Winsor and Newton all is good, but overpriced at $ 139. Edit: Here is a set WN / 10 tube for $ 43

Royal Talens is a set of 8 and Graham a set of 5 colors, but they lack color of land, one of the joys of gouache. You can still buy the game for the pure primary and complete with individual tubes sienna vintage, yellow ocher, raw umber, sienna and burnt red or Venetian, blacker if the game does not come with it .

Here is a previous post rich blog link on the different brands to choose from. You can still buy individual tubes other reputable companies but the price will add up quickly.

What I do in practice is to try all sorts of marks and colors. At one point I carry around 12-15 colors from different manufacturers. When I set up for a painting, I select the smallest possible set of colors that I have to paint the scene. I store tubes not used in large glass jars with lids which seal tightly. This prevents them from drying out.

Palette
There may be a plastic tray or metal of your choice, and it must be white or painted white. There are gray palettes, but I do not like to watercolor and gouache, because they make it more difficult to judge transparent blends.

I use the lid of a spray of colored pencils box painted white. It attaches to the bottom panel of my slight sketch easel with magnets.

Rags or Paper Towels
__gVirt_NP_NNS_NNPS <__ paper towels made by Bounty are lint. They can be reduced and applied to the pallet to extend the working hours of painting, and of course, they can also be used to clean brushes. Another solution to the brush cleaning is old T-shirts cut into square feet.

Cup water
I recommend Nalgene 2 oz jar for a pot pallet side and a plastic food container 32 ounce lower bound on the rack for cleaning brushes.

Crayon
A graphite pencil (HB) will for the implementation phase. If you want to use watercolor pencils, I recommend all Caran d'Ache 18 .

Pens
I use a Waterman pen brown ink for the written notes. Remember that ink fountain pen dissolves in water after drying, so if you do not mind your lines being blurred, save them until the end. If you prefer to linework before adding water washes, use waterproof pens, such as Micron, which come in many colors, including black and brown.

Water Brushes
I use water Niji brushes with round tip . I door normally between three and five water brushes. It is filled with water, and the others are filled with blue, black, brown, and the soluble ink in the gray water, such as ink Higgins Eternal .

transparent watercolor kit
have a defined watercolor as an add-on is not essential for painting in gouache, but if you have a transparent cake game, it opens up a lot more options. I recommend a small set with a glass-lined box so that you can hold in your easel with magnets.
Schmincke Small Watercolor Set (12 half pans)
Winsor and Newton 24 Pan Set With Metal Box
Sennelier Watercolour Metal Box (12 Tubes)
Blockx Watercolor Set (24 half pans)

gums
I wear two erasers, a Kneaded eraser and a white rubber latex .

Sharpener
I used a pencil Kum , which not only grabs the chips, but it also has a small flap which covers the hole, so that the chips do not leak and pollute the sketchbook pages and anything else in my sketch bag. Another good Staedtler pencil sharpener is , which has a flap to protect against shaving leaks, and two holes for graphite and colored pencil.

plastic clamps
This is a 2-inch Plastic Clamp and 3.75 inches Clamp . Of all the clips and clips that I have tried, these seem to be the most versatile to hold the book open or clipping the easel watercolor box.

President and bridge
The biggest decision of your installation strategy is whether to sit or stand. A folding tripod stool is a strong and lightweight option. I usually like to sit if I paint something that is close to the ground, like a flower, or if I paint a result. It is good to have a chair if you want to hold the sketchbook on your lap. I use a sketch easel house which I described in a blog earlier. The good thing about a tripod easel is that it will work for either standing or sitting.

The workshop
The workshop I mentioned earlier will be in the Denver Botanic Gardens in Denver, Colorado September 15-16, 2016. Sorry, there is sold, but FYI, it's called
painting on location in opaque media with water James Gurney.
